New Tenants

I just had to show you guys something.

nest

No, not my messy garage. Look again.

nest2

Look what was in my drawer. I was just in this drawer. How fast do these guys work? Maybe I should charge rent. And right on top of the planer. This is not a safe place to be raising babies.

nest4
#3 son ran right into them when he was going out to the car. He said he saw 3. Three?  We will have none of that kinky stuff around here.

bird

I tried to take a picture through the window on the door. It’s sort of foggy looking. So I went in the garage and stood there. They chirped at me at first. Umm, hello, I do believe this is my house. But then they just went on with building. It looks pretty done to me. They must be adding an addition. Doing a little remodeling perhaps. She probably got all up in his beak and insisted on a bigger place.

bird2

I feel really bad but I’m going to have to move it out of there. Why would they put it right there next to the most used entrance to my house? They are risk takers those little wrens. I think they are Carolina Wrens. There were only 2 that I saw and they were working in tandem bringing in more twigs. I made sure they were outside when I closed the door. I just bought a blue bird house too. If I run out tomorrow and buy a wren house will they just move in there? I wish I could just move the nest in there for them.

What if she is like ready now to lay those eggs? Oh I feel horrible. She could be out there breathing, hee hee hee hooooo, with no place to go. I can just hear her, What do you mean the door is closed? But I need to push now!

Any ideas on what I should do? I hate making them start all over.

Oh and a friendly reminder about the blogiversary giveaway!

  1. Oh, this post cracked me up! Truly, it put a smile on my face. :) I love little birds, but I don't want them in my garage either. ;)

I hope you are having a great weekend!

    Blessings,

  2. Oh you're adorable, and so are those birds! How lovely is nature really. Could you find somewhere nearby to put their home?

  3. This year I actually got rid of the old grill...they had been building nests in it for 2 years, but I just couldn't justify keeping it anymore, especially since it was in my front flower bed from being used as a Halloween prop. You are kind to worry Anita, but they really do build in the oddest places.

  4. well, i would probably cave and just leave it. :) my guilt would get the best of me..lol i have had many a nest in my front door wreaths.. & leave them be. they're gone soon enough. ;)

  5. You just never know where a bird will pick to build a nest! And they build fast, lay eggs fast and then they are gone. But I would have to move the nest to put my garage door down at night and when I leave the house. We live in a safe neighborhood, but I would feel uneasy having the door up all the time. Sorry little birds!

  6. Oh, my! I can tell you feel just like I would in this situation: totally conflicted! I don't know what you can do about it, but, as you said, they work fast. Hopefully they can get a new place together qickly!

  7. OH I just loved this post. Hmm not sure what I would do in this situation. Probably leave it where it is but then I don't know your home routine. Wishing you luck with whatever decision you make.

  8. Hi Anita-

What a surprise! I don't not know what I would do. Maybe you can take the whole drawer out and place it up in a tree on a sturdy branch until they get resettled.

    My best- Diane

  9. That is a dilemma. You have to close the garage sometime! I'd probably just move it now and feel guilty the rest of my life.

This cracked me up! I wonder what happened to the third one?

  10. Isn't that just the MOST fun? I have had Carolina Wrens build nests in a wreath that has a bird house on it. But they build behind the wreath! It's so enjoyable to hear those little things.

  11. They obviously felt right at home in your space! Says alot about your hostessing skills!!

  12. Hi Anita..I know your dilemma, but I would move them now before they lay eggs...Could you move the whole bin outside? I am so enjoying your blog..glad I found you thru Suzanne's..I spent a few great holidays in Flordia and have great memories!

  13. Oh my goodness, of all places! How sweet that it's the "mommy" and "daddy" working together to make their house. What about taking the entire drawer and leaving it right outside the garage? Wait a minute, do you leave your garage door open often? Because if they have a "sneaky" way of getting int here, then just leave it alone.

  14. That is absolutely amazing. I wonder what drew them to that space for their nest building? It is just wonderful how they build their little homes, but not always great when they choose the wrong space. Good luck! I know I would feel guilty for quite some time and I would dwell on the what if's. :/ Best wishes, Tammy

  15. Oh gosh that is a dilemma and a very odd place to build a nest. I am not sure what you should do.

  16. Remind me not to drink coffee when I read your posts. I don't want to spray the laptop from laughing. Oh, I wish I knew a good solution. It seems if they can build a nest that fast, they can build another. Maybe you could leave the drawer outside of the garage for a couple days and see what happens. Good luck! :D

  17. LOL! It makes you wonder why construction and remodeling jobs take so long when you see how teeny tiny birds can whip up a home in no time.

We had birds nesting on a tiny opening at the top of our two story entry above our porch. I finally couldn't take the droppings and falling nest materials and annual dead-bird-on the porch and had someone cover it over with a piece of wood.

  18. Oooh, I just love wrens! And I think you are right about them being Carolina Wrens. They build the most amazing nests. Maybe you could call a bird rescue organization and ask if they have any tips on relocating the nest!

  19. Great post! I would have been very surprised to find that nest in my drawer too! I wonder if they would continue to build the nest if you removed that drawer and put it in a sheltered space outside of your garage? Crazy birds.

    Peace!

  20. OH my goodness, Anita!!! You cracked me up!!! once again!

Little buggers...they build anywhere...obviously. But seriously they do and they will build again. I have a little cottage bird feeder that we put out every spring, they come and do their thing and have their babies there. Prior to that they used to build their nest in an old feeder. We had to throw that out because it had rotted so badly. They will find another home. Hopefully it won't be in your glove box next time. Maybe they wanted some place cooler. They could have flown up here!! But I would move them out, if you really don't want them there. Otherwise they will find a way to make this their home year after year!

    Good luck!

  21. I enjoyed this post. You are funny. I think you should let them stay there. If you can't keep it there and you have to move it, they will rebuild and maybe use some of the supplies from the old nest. I guess they would then be repurposing.

  22. Oh Anita... how funny. It's amazing how those little birds find the perfect place for their nest.. although it's may not be perfect for us.. you have to come on over and see my post from a few weeks ago.. the babies have flown away as fast as the mom and dad built the nest... sweet.. come see.

  23. awww.... poor babies! :) I built a house a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked how fast the birds "moved" in. They can build their nests so quickly.
Better that you caught it now before they laid their eggs, eh?
They will quickly build another nest somewhere else.

  25. Two weeks ago, I posted about a similar situation...Mrs. Bird built a nest in an open case of bottled water, just a few feet from the back door in my garage. We're letting our nest stay because, for the most part, Mrs. Bird doesn't seem too troubled by all the activity in and out our door. If you decide not to remove the nest, I can assure you from experience, the babies are usually grown and out of the nest within a matter of weeks. Actually, it looks like you will have a "bird's eye view" and it is quite fun to watch their growth and development.

  26. Oh my. Well, I would hurry and get that out of there in a jiffy...poor things all that work gone to waste. But, if there are eggs in the nest then I would just let them be.

A few years ago we had some birds build a nest in our grill. I don't know what they were thinking, it gets like an oven in there when its in the sun...anyway, the eggs hatched and they kept kicking one little baby out of the nest and we'd pick it up and put it back...over and over. We also feed it protein powder mixed with sugar and water. Pretty soon the parents took care of it and they were all grown and out of there in no time. Maybe you should let your birds stay...it might be interesting :)

  29. Oh no! What a odd place, birds are so interesting. I have no idea what to do with the nest. Can you move it to a tree? Since they built this one pretty fast maybe they can whip up another one in no time before she starts heeing and hooing. :) Love your posts my dear!
    Good luck!

  30. How cool. I say let them stay... makes for a great story.

  31. I'm sorry I'm commenting late - it took me a while to pick up my chin from off of the floor!! I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE BUILT A NEST THERE!!! Uh, that is what it is, right, not some weird termite colony?

  32. I would take what I need from under the nest and in the drawer, let them have the drawer. It appears to be a plastic drawer, so I would Take the drawer outside and place it up high on a shed roof or in a tree, as close to the original spot as possible, so the birdies find it. Whatever you do dont touch any of it with your hands because they usually will abandon it if they smell the human touch. Use plastic gloves if you have to. You could let them stay. I like a Rosy Notes story.
