I’m still here. Painting and waxing.
I’ve come across a bit of a problem. I have this stash of knobs. It’s a little weakness of mine.
But they all have these sort of posts on the back that require a nut.
Not so much an issue with drawers but with the cabinet the screw head on the old wooden knobs hit the magnet and kept the door closed. With the new knobs I would need to cut down the screw (or is it a bolt?) and then the nut would make it stick out a bit from the door.
Do you think this would still work? Also, any idea how to cut the darn things?
I may have to wait until hubby gets home since I’m sure there is a tool in that garage that does this.
Are there any pretty knobs out there that have the regular screws? I know there are the traditional kitchen cabinet ones but I am wanting something a little sparkly.
The ones I see all seem to have the nut on the end.
These aren’t bad though if I can get them to work.
What do you think?
I do love the last one. Not sure on the other questions, no nut, cutting? CLueless, sorry:(
ReplyDeleteI like the sparkly one. Not sure where you can get the regular screw ones. I know Menards has a tone of choices, including sparkly ones. You can try to cut the screw/bolt with a hack saw? I hope you find something that works. Love the look of the hutch so far from what I can see. :)

LOVE the bog sparkly one! and yes you can cut them down. you can use a dremel and it will work beautifully- i have done this before!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm agreeing with everyone else of the glass knob. I like it best. I've never looked for the type of screw you are needing, but I agree it can probably be cut down. I'm anxious to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteGo for the glass ones! And can you just go to the HD or L and buy new screws or bolts?? That's what my MIL did for a dresser she put new glass knobs on.
ReplyDeleteAs far as cutting....use a hack saw. I think that's what it's called. EC isn't here right now, but I think that's what he used to cut some bolts for our deck.
Oh and by the by, the cabinet peeking out there LOOKS AMAZING!!!

For the bolt end of the glass knob I use a mini set of bolt cuts found at the hardware store. It just snaps off with minor pressure where every you want to cut it. You can also counter sink the nut into the backside of the door by drilling out a shallow cavity using a drill bit as large around as the nut.

I forgot to mention, my local Home Depot (CANADA) does carry glass knobs with a double sleeve (female fitting and screw)that have the finished looked of most regular knobs on the inside of the cabinet.

I would see if someone in the hardware dept at Home Depot will cut them down for you. and then you can anything else for the project there too (or at Lowes) Best wishes :)
ReplyDeleteWe have those in cobalt blue all through the kitchen and yes, they do need to be cut down. I can't for the life of me remember how my husband did it...i'll try and remember to ask him tonight!!!!
ReplyDeleteBut i do like the home depot approach!

My husband has cut these "bolts" down for me before since we have a few of these types of knobs... (I don't think he trusts me with a saw). Can't wait to see the finished results :)

Keep us posted!
Those are pretty! I have a thing for sparkles. I love the colors of the cabinet already. Can't wait until it's all done.
ReplyDeletePretty knobs! :) I would use my jigsaw to cut the bolts.
ReplyDeletegood luck!

I love the sparkly one too! Hope you can figure it out to use it!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

I love the girly one!! Can't wait to see the whole thing!!
ReplyDeleteAnita I have cut down the bolts lots of times, and I just use a hacksaw. The bolts get really really hot straight after being cut, I have learnt that the hard way, lol! I have never had much success getting ordinary screws to work, the threads are different to the little bolts.
ReplyDeleteThe sneak peak of the hutch looks great!

Sorry, just re-read your post and I have an idea. What you could do is use a drill bit that is bigger than the nut to drill a bigger hole from the back, that would go say half-way through the thickness of your door. The hole would need to be big enough to fit a socket head in around the nut to tighten it. Failing that, which could go bad if you drill too far, what about just glueing them on?

Sorry you'll be getting sick of me, just had another idea...you can get screws with a similar thread to the bolts on the knobs, take the knob to your local hardware store and try one till it works. Think that is all my ideas now, lol
