What I Love About My Home....

I first read Janice's post on what she loved about her house. It was so lovely and her home so charming. I then read Grace's post. She also wrote a wonderful post on all the things she loved and showed us her beautiful home. Grace was doing a round up of other posts and I wanted so much to join in but I was really struggling with the "love" part. I've had a love/hate relationship with this house since we moved here. I wouldn't say this is my ideal house. Sometimes I wonder if we should have rented until we found more of what we wanted. But we didn't. And after leaving a house I did love I had to remember again what makes a house a home.

When we put our home in GA up for sale it took less than a week to sell. So, we were a bit pressed for time to find a house. We had to get our youngest registered for school. We knew we wanted a smaller house with a pool and it had to have room for a boat. So, that narrowed things down. We ended up with this house after seeing it once before. I knew it would need a lot of lightening up since it had all of this stained wood. Nothing was painted. They had just put in all stainless steel appliances and granite but did not do anything to the cabinets. More paint is needed. So, while I love my appliances, I have no pictures of the kitchen. Not until I do some painting. I do however have a pretty nice view of the pool from my couch.

 Which Henry enjoys as well.

Flowers and shells always make it feel like home.

We moved here a year ago due to my husband changing jobs. It was a hard move for me to make. Everyone kept saying I should be used to it by now since we had been in the military and we have had our share of moves. But this was the first time we were moving and two of our kids were not. I think that left me in a funk for awhile. I did work on my bedroom pretty quickly. Only because it was covered in wallpaper that made me nauseous. It had to go if I was going to sleep well!

My hall tree with a peek into the family room.

Keeping treasures around that remind me of the ones I love even if they are no longer with us all the time.

I love this house for what and who is inside it. Family and friends and my treasures. It has just taken me awhile to get here. I'm making progress. While I work on painting and decorating to make the house something I love more, I began to realize that I love the home that it is already.

Pictures were taken my son #1 except for the bedroom and hall tree.Thanks.

  1. Anita..
we've all been there at one time or another.
Due to divorce, I left a gorgeous home built from my plans on a beautiful lake. I now live in a 40+ year old house which needs major upgrades in appliances and bathrooms..
but despite the gorgeous dream house which was a beautiful and loveless shell, this ugly duckling knows and shows nothing but love..
and that is what is so/most important to me!
    warm sandy hugs..

  3. Ahh...someone else with a divorce story. I gave up the dream home we were building to get out of a rotten relationship. My house was also on a lake. Now I am living in a little log house with my dogs & the cat. I am happier now than I was & I truly agree that it really doesn't matter where you live, as long as you surround yourself with things that make you happy & inspire you to just live your life as best as you can! and, as time goes on, i am SO thankful i don't ever have to clean that gigantic house!! :)

  7. I'm jealous of your pool.
We have an irrigation canal behind our house, but that doesn't count.

I think your home is beautiful. The bedroom looks especially serene.

  8. Lovely view to the pool. The bedroom is so delightful! I think we all have love/hate relationships with our homes at time. But I liked the focus of thinking about things we do like. I was kindof surprised ,because some of the things I complain about...have grown on me and I like them in this house at this time. Sooo It made me change my thinking a little bit.

  10. Great view of the pool and your bedroom is lovely,so serene. I understand how you feel. It is really hard to leave children behind. Our son and grand babies are in the upstate... that is why we haven't moved to the condo at the beach permanently.Just keep those family photos plentiful and in easy reach. 14. You are making that house your home little by little. I can see the love in it now. So sorry your children didn't make the move with you, can't imagine how difficult that is. Just about the time I begin to make peace with my house, something else goes wrong & I wonder at my wisdom of ever buying it. I hope one day it feels more like home.

  16. I can so relate, in fact I read some of your post out loud and my husband thought I had written it on my blog, lol. We have moved countries, gone from big house to average size. Wish we had rented first but rushed in. I promised the kids a pool or double storey house, they didn't get either. Now I'm redecorating this ugly duckling in the hopes that it'll sell really quickly so I can find my special house. I think being a stay at home mum makes it hard as I'm in this environment all day.
Thanks for sharing your home and your heart.
