Giveaway Reminder
and Toe Kick Advice

Don’t forget about the FOLK magazine giveaway I have going on.
You have until Friday night to enter!

LOOK!
I went outside this morning to check on my garden and was surprised to see these little guys.

peas

My first sugar peas!

and this…

Zucchini blossoms!
The garden is coming along nicely. I'm really looking forward to the green beans and tomatoes.
My carrot seeds even seem to be coming up. I'll be shocked if I get actual carrots!

The rest of the day was not so much fun.
I’ve scrubbing down cabinets and taking off hardware. So my kitchen looks like this now.

(Whoa, that is a little blurry! These were all taken with my iphone.
I think I was just too tired to hold it still for that last shot!)

It was disgusting just how dirty they were. I know some people don’t like white cabinets because they will show the dirt more. Well, I think I’d rather see the dirt right away so I can wipe it down then for it to hide and build up like it did.
ICK!

Both pairs of my rubber gloves were ripped so I spent all day with may hands in bucket after bucket of water. They now feel like paper.

I am off to fill some holes so I can add new hardware later.
Hope to start the priming tomorrow.

Oh hey, see that toe kick down there below the cabinets? I'm thinking they should be white too.
What say you? There is something in a vinyl I could put down there. Anyone have that?
Okay, everyone go look at their toe kicks and get back to me.

I'll be waiting.

  2. wow, I was expecting pictures of squirrels. Glad it wasn't the case!!!
I cannot tell you how I hated painting my cabinets (cream colored) by the time I was finished. Plus, I distressed and stained them. But I have loved them for over 10 years....and it's time to do something about them again. Oh, the GRIME that has built up since deciding they are going. Yeesh. I'm just impressed you showed us the inside of your cabinets!!!!
Toe kicks. Hate them. They are only good for spiders here. I painted those along with the cabinets.

  3. The vinyl toe kick (if I'm thinking of the same thing) can be a good alternative - especially because it is easy to clean once scuffed. I just highly recommend using a lot of adhesive on them. They are usually "self-stick" - which means they'll begin peeling off soon unless you double up on them.

Oh squash blossoms! Batter 'em, and then get them in the fryer ASAP! I was that annoying guy always asking our CSA if they could snag me a few blossoms each week, with little luck. They don't store well, so pluck and cook the same day if you can. They are such a treat, and only available to people with access to local or home grown squash.

    1. I have never tried that Jimmy but I have heard they are pretty good. Do you pick them when they are still closed? I'll give it a try when I have my kitchen back. :)

  4. So jealous of your veggies! I would love to start a vegetable garden someday soon. My father-in-law is moving down the street in a few months so maybe he can show me how!!

  5. Your garden is looking wonderful, Anita! There is nothing better than your own vegetable garden. We have had such weird weather this year that I haven't been able to plant any veggies yet. Have fun with your kitchen project!

  6. Yeah for your garden!! I can't wait to see your cabinets. My toe kick is wood, we were too lazy to get the rubbery stuff. :)

  7. Your so right about the dirt showing on white
cabinets.. I painted mine a few years ago and
now it's so easy to wipe after each splash or
touch.... as for the toe kick.. yep, white!
Have a fun time with your project. You will
    be so glad you did!

  8. Anita--it's a huge job! been there, done that! but you will be ohhh so glad you did when it's over.
I don't want to talk about toe kicks...I painted my kitchen cabinets in the fall of 2010, and I still have NOT painted that stupid toe kick! :(

    good luck!

  9. Jealous of your garden. Mine looks like dried up dead stuff. Cuz it is! Last year we got the cutest teeny tiny carrots - they were delicious!

Toe kick? Thinking it should be white. I'm a month or so behind you....not looking forward to starting the kitchen, but once it gets going I'll be looking forward to having it done! And I'm with you, about seeing the dirt right away and cleaning it. Our dirt is really old on our brown oak. YUK! I may need to chisel it off!

Oh and the gravy boat is going to be sailing up north! : )

  10. Oh, Anita, good luck on your cabinet redo! I can't wait to see it. I don't think I'd want a white toe-kick--I wouldn't think it would look clean enough. Maybe you should leave them black and add some faux cabinet "legs."

  11. I think I'd paint it. It will need repainting every so often, and I don't think you could do that with vinyl. We used painted baseboards on our cabinets, and they could use a new coat of paint.
Your kitchen will look so good!
