Johnny on the Spot

How do you like the addition to my landscaping? Let me introduce you to Johnny. Johnny has been a fixture in my yard now for the last week. He sits under the shade of the oak tree. He's here all the time ready to do his job. Unlike others, I won't mention names. He's a lovely shade of blue-green. He's conveniently located next to the hammock in case you are exhausted and need a siesta.

Starting this little bathroom project, what we thought would be little, was a major milestone for me. I have issues with commitment. I'll admit it. I have a hard time with decision. I've gotten better. Really. But when it goes to big ticket items like hiring someone to rip up your house, I'm back to having issues. So, this may or may not fit in with Funky Junk's idea of Gitter Done. Even though it's not officially done, it is started and for me that was a major Gitter Done moment. We needed the half bath and I was just going to have to suck it up and go for it. Isn't that your motto Donna? No? I think it should be.

This is what the back yard is like. A long and winding ditch. It starts at the back wall by the pool. The other side of that will be the bath. Dirt and white dog don't go well together.

It runs past all the camellias and towards Johnny. Then rounds the corner of the garage. I'm making the pictures extra large so you can experience the enormity of the mess along with me. What's that mess behind Johnny you say? Well, that will be an extension of the driveway. New home for my husband's second wife, the boat.

They had to jack hammer a strip of the driveway out and then continue the trench through the flower bed, or what used to be the flower bed, all the way to the street. I'll spare you with more pictures of trenches and pipes but trust me when I say it goes on and on. The driveway is not short.

Where there once was a closet filled with .....stuff.....

There is now this..... While you're looking at my lovely laundry room. Look down at the floor. I'm trying to find more of that tile. I haven't yet. But I'd like some ideas and opinions on either using the same tiles, which are large almost 18x18 or going with something else. I think they are called Azteca Vecchio Tesoro. I got that off the box but there were only a couple in there. It's also in my kitchen which the laundry is connected to. I'm not sure how I feel about switching to something different or how it would look. How to transition it?

There will be a pocket door there, not a swing door. Which I need to pick out. I'm thinking a two panel. I'd like to switch out other door eventually and they will be easier to paint. Thanks for coming by and looking at my mess. Let me know your thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

  1. Oh my goodness! I am commiserating with you. You should hang a sign there that says, "In the future....this will be AWESOME".

All of those pipes and ripped up driveway and flowerbeds and.....ugh. You hold on. That port-o-potty will soon be gone! Lisa~

  2. Well, I like "Johnny's" color. Hang in there. Bathroom projects are not fun.

My dad transitioned some smaller tile in a bathroom with some larger tile in their hallway by turning the small tile diagonally in the threshold of the door. It looks nice.

  3. Oh you have no idea how I can absolutely relate to this post. I giggled the whole time I read it.

As you know, last week I had two giant trenches dug all down my driveway and at the same time had 4 gigantic grave-size holes in the backyard with all of the grass trampled from the excavator. It wasn't and still isn't pretty.

If it makes you feel better, when Alex gutted our half-bath, you could see right through the floor into the basement. It was scary. I'll have to post the before and after pictures soon so that you can see that it really does work out in the end!

P.S. Not sure about the tiles? If it were me, I would try to match them with the existing tiles because I like when flooring is continuous. Just my two cents, though. :)

  4. How exciting! I am so excited to see your project when it is done. I agree with the previous commenter about trying to match the tiles so it's continuous. Good luck with everything :)

  6. LOL!! Say... I need one of those bright teal loos beside my bright blue smurf pool! What lovely lawn ornaments would they make as a set! :)

Way to go! Sometimes starting a project is the biggest step, so you fit right in GD like a glove. I look forward to watching your progress!

  7. It is hard to just go for it and start these big projects. I know it seems hard to believe right now, but now that you've got the ball rolling, it'll be over before you know it, and this will all be but a scary memory (lol)!
Can't wait to see the finished product!

  8. I don't even know what to say to help you. Is your porta potty just for the construction crew??? I hope you can find the same tile. If you can't, I wonder if you can do a pattern tile that has some of the same colors as the one in your kitchen?

  10. Anita - I feel for you and can relate! It is a tough project to start...I dragged my feet for awhile. We're coming up on the tail end of a 6 month long remodel with our kitchen/dining room. We're been using our bathroom as a kitchen. The mess gets overwhelming but you just have to keep in mind the end result! It will be well worth the mess and chaos. I think for me having people (workmen) in our home every day for 6 months got to me but then I learned to go with the flow. Good luck to you and can't wait to see your finished room! How exciting!!

  12. Anita you are so funny. That Johnny is a perfect tropical color addition to your yard. Hubby's second wife? Bwahahahah
You really do have quite the mess going there. But it's totally worth it, I know you'll be happy w/the finished project, and I'm sure you'll have it all decorated waaay cute.
and i have no opinion on the tiles, that's why I read your blog. :)
