Laundry Room Redo

I didn’t mean to leave you hanging with my bit of deconstruction the other day. There were some good guesses. Suzanne came closest when she said shower curtain. Well, it’s a curtain of sorts.

I gave it a weathered paint job with some gray, white and black paint and used it for my valance in my laundry room. I like the driftwood look that it has now.

Let me refresh your memory a bit on my laundry room. The before.

And here it is now.  For those who are new here you may notice that there is now a bathroom instead of a closet. You can read about how that came about here. And get a better view of it. Best thing we could have done. Now we have a guest bath on the main floor and it’s right next to the pool.

The laundry got painted the with leftover paint from the bathroom. The fabric, yellow trim and rope I already had. I just had to get the grommets for the top. The rope actually came from a hammock that fell apart. I saved it because I wanted to try to make the monkey’s fist knot like Suzanne of Meridian Road did. I am still going to try it.

The cabinet I had too, I just added some fabric behind the glass to hide all my cleaning stuff.

The bell I bought last summer on clearance and had set it aside. I knew I wanted to put it in here. I can’t hammer anything into that far wall due to the pocket door. So I needed something light that could hang from a command hook. I found the shell/driftwood thing (I don’t know what to call it) at TJ Maxx. I just need to hide the hook a bit.

The yellow shelves fit the wall nicely. I need to add some containers to hold some sun block and other things. Right now I filled the bucket with goggles and sunglasses. We always have to have spare sunglasses for the boat.

The doors still need to be painted. It was hard enough painting the trim. And the new laundry room door make such a huge difference. You can see a bit of the old one in the before shot. With having 4 doors in here they will all be white. BUT the garage side of the garage door will be a color.

So there you have it. My lighter and brighter laundry room. It is such a tight spot and it's the entry we use most. I'm so glad it is finished and nicer to look at. Now I have to do laundry before I start hearing, I don’t have any underwear, and they go commando.

You Build Some, You Tear Some Apart

So the other day I showed you these shelves I made for my laundry room.

While trying to find things around the house to finish off the laundry room I found this in my closet. It was too long to use on the wall where I'm putting the new yellow shelves. Which I why I built some.

I did think of another use for it.  I just needed to take it apart. Cracking the top shelf was not in the plan.  But I'm not terribly upset. That wasn't the part I was after. It will go into my someday project pile. I'm sure it will be fine with a little glue. Right?

So, any guesses to what I have planned for this bit of deconstruction?

Making Some Shelves

Okay, so I’ve had the stuff to make these shelves for my laundry room for quite some time now. I figured I’d better them them put together. Even though I still haven’t finished painting the walls and the trim in there. They were pretty easy to put together so I thought I’d show you what I did.

Here is what I started with. If you don’t have a miter saw a hand saw and a miter box would be just as good since the cuts are small. The poplar boards I bought to size.  24x10 I think.

saw

I did a little measuring. I marked in the direction I wanted the miter cut to go.

marking
Then I held the trim up against the fence just like it would be up against the shelf.
I had already made the cut and just used the tape measure to hold it still for the picture. Not enough hands.

45 angle

To get the next angle cut you can swing the angle guide to the opposite side. That’s what I did here. I had to cut off an inch or so to get that opposite angle before I could measure for the next side. Another way to do it is to keep your original 45 degree angle like in the shot above and just flip the trim piece upside down. I also had to move it to 0 to get the flat end for the backside.

opposite 45

When you get all of your sides measured and cut you have this. I used wood glue and finishing nails to put it all together. I didn’t want to drag out the nail gun. I probably should have. Let’s just say hammering is not my strong suit. Nothing a little wood filler didn’t cure. I did predrill before hammering in the nails. No pictures as there was glue involved. I’m not very neat.

pieces

Next was the brackets. They have this little metal thing on the back for hanging. You can switch it to either the short side or the long side. I wanted the long side under the shelf so I switch them. Fast and easy to do.

bracket

Here they are all painted out. Ok, the brackets aren't attached to the shelves yet. Not perfect but not bad either.  I started out with a Martha Stewart sample and it wasn’t the right yellow. So I mixed it with another sample and got this shade. Sort of buttery yellow.

two-shelves
They will go up in the laundry room when I get that painted. I just dread moving the washer and dryer. There isn’t much space in there to move around.

side-of-shelves

But at least the shelves are done and ready to go. I’ve been wanting to paint something yellow for awhile now. This was a nice small project to do just that.

shelf
I will show them again once it is all finished. Is anyone else out there getting a bit of yellow fever?

I hurried to get this done so I could join up with Marianne at her party. I missed her last one and didn't want to miss it again. Thanks Marianne!

Johnny on the Spot

How do you like the addition to my landscaping? Let me introduce you to Johnny. Johnny has been a fixture in my yard now for the last week. He sits under the shade of the oak tree. He's here all the time ready to do his job. Unlike others, I won't mention names. He's a lovely shade of blue-green. He's conveniently located next to the hammock in case you are exhausted and need a siesta.

Starting this little bathroom project, what we thought would be little, was a major milestone for me. I have issues with commitment. I'll admit it. I have a hard time with decision. I've gotten better. Really. But when it goes to big ticket items like hiring someone to rip up your house, I'm back to having issues. So, this may or may not fit in with Funky Junk's idea of Gitter Done. Even though it's not officially done, it is started and for me that was a major Gitter Done moment. We needed the half bath and I was just going to have to suck it up and go for it. Isn't that your motto Donna? No? I think it should be.

This is what the back yard is like. A long and winding ditch. It starts at the back wall by the pool. The other side of that will be the bath. Dirt and white dog don't go well together.

It runs past all the camellias and towards Johnny. Then rounds the corner of the garage. I'm making the pictures extra large so you can experience the enormity of the mess along with me. What's that mess behind Johnny you say? Well, that will be an extension of the driveway. New home for my husband's second wife, the boat.

They had to jack hammer a strip of the driveway out and then continue the trench through the flower bed, or what used to be the flower bed, all the way to the street. I'll spare you with more pictures of trenches and pipes but trust me when I say it goes on and on. The driveway is not short.

Where there once was a closet filled with .....stuff.....

There is now this..... While you're looking at my lovely laundry room. Look down at the floor. I'm trying to find more of that tile. I haven't yet. But I'd like some ideas and opinions on either using the same tiles, which are large almost 18x18 or going with something else. I think they are called Azteca Vecchio Tesoro. I got that off the box but there were only a couple in there. It's also in my kitchen which the laundry is connected to. I'm not sure how I feel about switching to something different or how it would look. How to transition it?

There will be a pocket door there, not a swing door. Which I need to pick out. I'm thinking a two panel. I'd like to switch out other door eventually and they will be easier to paint. Thanks for coming by and looking at my mess. Let me know your thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
