Project Reveal and Winners

Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to come by and celebrate with me, Suzanne and Maureen. It’s been a lot of fun this past year. I look forward to another year and getting to know more of you.

Well there is no beating around the bush since you can see the picture. Yes I did C. I tell you what, some of you should be PI’s. You have some great detective skills. There were 15 correct guesses. That’s almost half of you. Some recognized the bead board. Some the ribbon. Well done ladies, well done.

shelf 2

Here is what it looked like before. Plain and beat up. I added the bead board. Drilled a hole for the dowel and slipped on some spools of thread on the ends. It will be going in the sewing room. I will show that to you another day. Let’s get to it.

So out of the 15 correct guesses my winner is:

blogiversary winner
And the 13th person that guessed correctly is:

Congrats Yanet!

For the grand prize of the Home Depot gift card this is what we did.
Maureen was A with 38 comments, Suzanne B with 33 comments and I was C with 33 comments. So we added them up in that order. And the random winner for this group is:

grand prize winner

And the 79th person is:

Congrats to Stacey!

Did you guess Suzanne's and Maureen's projects correctly? Go over there and see who won. Yanet and Stacey, please send me an email with your info so I can get your prizes to you.

Hope everyone has a great week. :)

Old Drawer Now a Shelf

I want to thank everyone for coming by. You guys leave the best comments. Shirley cracked me up when she said she saw Santa in the clouds of the picture I posted yesterday!

I’ve been working on a project for my sewing room. I can’t show you just yet but I will be showing you some bits and piece along the way. It’s really the guest room and I’m trying to cram a sewing area in there too. We’ll see how it goes. I’m still searching for a daybed so I’ll have more room.

cratebirds6

I picked up this box/crate/drawer thing at an estate sale awhile ago. I spied it on the first day but didn’t get it. It kept gnawing at me so I went back and grabbed it on the half off day. Hubby says it’s the drawer to a military field desk.

crate             crate2

It was pretty beat up and filthy. I gave it a scrub and got out the paint. I’ve had enough olive drab in my life. I was going to show you how I did the weathered white washed treatment but there really is no rhyme or reason to what I did.

cratebirds5

I started with white, added some gray of different shades. I would add black to some, then lighten it with white. I just kept building until I drove myself nuts. That’s my tutorial. Paint until you can’t take it any longer and then you’re done! I used a shade of oops paint and I wasn’t thrilled with it. So I used some white glaze on top of it all. But I can see now that I may add more. I guess I wasn’t nuts enough. I think I will wax it but the paint needs to cure. The Briwax I have was taking off the paint. Give me a holler if you have any questions.

cratebirds4            cratebirds3

I sanded it a bit on the edges and on all the metal pieces. The metal pieces are at all the joints.

cratebirds2

I found these cute little birds thanks to Michelle from Emerald Cove. I spied one that she had in the background of one of her pictures. She is the sweetest and let me know that she found hers over at Tj Maxx. I just love them. My son calls them birds on a stick. Whatever.

Oh and you need to go see what she just did to her fireplace. Just gorgeous. Something else to add to my to do list.

As I was painting this little number 2 appeared. I had not noticed it before and haven’t a clue why it would be there.

Now I just have to figure out where it will go. It may end up in the sewing room. I could hang it on the wall or stack it on the table. I think it will make a great little shelf.

Laundry Room Redo

I didn’t mean to leave you hanging with my bit of deconstruction the other day. There were some good guesses. Suzanne came closest when she said shower curtain. Well, it’s a curtain of sorts.

rings
valance

I gave it a weathered paint job with some gray, white and black paint and used it for my valance in my laundry room. I like the driftwood look that it has now.

Let me refresh your memory a bit on my laundry room. The before.

And here it is now.  For those who are new here you may notice that there is now a bathroom instead of a closet. You can read about how that came about here. And get a better view of it. Best thing we could have done. Now we have a guest bath on the main floor and it’s right next to the pool.

laundry2

The laundry got painted the with leftover paint from the bathroom. The fabric, yellow trim and rope I already had. I just had to get the grommets for the top. The rope actually came from a hammock that fell apart. I saved it because I wanted to try to make the monkey’s fist knot like Suzanne of Meridian Road did. I am still going to try it.

laundry6

The cabinet I had too, I just added some fabric behind the glass to hide all my cleaning stuff.

cabinet

The bell I bought last summer on clearance and had set it aside. I knew I wanted to put it in here. I can’t hammer anything into that far wall due to the pocket door. So I needed something light that could hang from a command hook. I found the shell/driftwood thing (I don’t know what to call it) at TJ Maxx. I just need to hide the hook a bit.

The yellow shelves fit the wall nicely. I need to add some containers to hold some sun block and other things. Right now I filled the bucket with goggles and sunglasses. We always have to have spare sunglasses for the boat.

The doors still need to be painted. It was hard enough painting the trim. And the new laundry room door make such a huge difference. You can see a bit of the old one in the before shot. With having 4 doors in here they will all be white. BUT the garage side of the garage door will be a color.

laundry

So there you have it. My lighter and brighter laundry room. It is such a tight spot and it's the entry we use most. I'm so glad it is finished and nicer to look at. Now I have to do laundry before I start hearing, I don’t have any underwear, and they go commando.

You Build Some, You Tear Some Apart

So the other day I showed you these shelves I made for my laundry room.

While trying to find things around the house to finish off the laundry room I found this in my closet. It was too long to use on the wall where I'm putting the new yellow shelves. Which I why I built some.

I did think of another use for it.  I just needed to take it apart. Cracking the top shelf was not in the plan.  But I'm not terribly upset. That wasn't the part I was after. It will go into my someday project pile. I'm sure it will be fine with a little glue. Right?

So, any guesses to what I have planned for this bit of deconstruction?

Making Some Shelves

Okay, so I’ve had the stuff to make these shelves for my laundry room for quite some time now. I figured I’d better them them put together. Even though I still haven’t finished painting the walls and the trim in there. They were pretty easy to put together so I thought I’d show you what I did.

Here is what I started with. If you don’t have a miter saw a hand saw and a miter box would be just as good since the cuts are small. The poplar boards I bought to size.  24x10 I think.

saw

I did a little measuring. I marked in the direction I wanted the miter cut to go.

marking
Then I held the trim up against the fence just like it would be up against the shelf.
I had already made the cut and just used the tape measure to hold it still for the picture. Not enough hands.

45 angle

To get the next angle cut you can swing the angle guide to the opposite side. That’s what I did here. I had to cut off an inch or so to get that opposite angle before I could measure for the next side. Another way to do it is to keep your original 45 degree angle like in the shot above and just flip the trim piece upside down. I also had to move it to 0 to get the flat end for the backside.

opposite 45

When you get all of your sides measured and cut you have this. I used wood glue and finishing nails to put it all together. I didn’t want to drag out the nail gun. I probably should have. Let’s just say hammering is not my strong suit. Nothing a little wood filler didn’t cure. I did predrill before hammering in the nails. No pictures as there was glue involved. I’m not very neat.

pieces

Next was the brackets. They have this little metal thing on the back for hanging. You can switch it to either the short side or the long side. I wanted the long side under the shelf so I switch them. Fast and easy to do.

bracket

Here they are all painted out. Ok, the brackets aren't attached to the shelves yet. Not perfect but not bad either.  I started out with a Martha Stewart sample and it wasn’t the right yellow. So I mixed it with another sample and got this shade. Sort of buttery yellow.

two-shelves
They will go up in the laundry room when I get that painted. I just dread moving the washer and dryer. There isn’t much space in there to move around.

side-of-shelves

But at least the shelves are done and ready to go. I’ve been wanting to paint something yellow for awhile now. This was a nice small project to do just that.

shelf
I will show them again once it is all finished. Is anyone else out there getting a bit of yellow fever?

I hurried to get this done so I could join up with Marianne at her party. I missed her last one and didn't want to miss it again. Thanks Marianne!
